At present, the staff of Stiki is adding the finishing touches to the new housing estimation system for the Ministry of Health and Social Security. The tests of the system have been going well and the plan is to connect the first estimating institutions in the middle of February.

The housing of elderly people in nursing homes is dealt with in the Icelandic Act of Services for the Elderly (1999, nr. 125, 31st of December). According to law, an estimation has to be carried out on all individuals that apply for housing in nursing homes. Special estimation groups in every region do the estimation. In housing estimation, the need of nursing is estimated and what kind of nursing is best for the individual. When the estimation is completed, the elderly can apply to the homes he opts for.

Usually, there are waiting lists for the beds in nursing homes, and the main objective of the housing estimation is to find those individuals who have the most urgent need for nursing and let them have priority when beds in nursing homes are allocated.
